Illustration template on how to embroider the Kanatitsa ornament.

What does the ornament symbolise?

The Kanatitsa is an enhanced version of the Makaz ornament. The Makaz is a familial sign that represents a rhombus conisiting of two triagles whose points touch together to represent engagement between two people and the joining of the two families. Following is the Big Makaz that represents the wedding between the two people, where the points of the two triangles are now merged together instead of just touching. The Big Makaz symbolises the divine and earthy nature, the male and female beginning and the seeking of harmony and balance.

To form the Kanatitsa, two smaller triangles are added on each side of the Big Makaz. They sumbolise the expansion and continuation of a family – the birth of children. By doubling or tripling the triangles on each side we create the Big Kanatitsa and the Great Kanatitsa respecfully, which symbolises the further growth of the family.
